Data Viz #08 Toolkit & Proj Updates

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

ToolKit - CARTO

This week I have explore CARTO which is a data visualization tool with locations. I looked at the demo project it provides and it allowed me to see store information and comparing store to store. The overall UI is very clean and intuitive. Each store is represented as a blue dot on the map. When the user clicks on it, the screen zoomed in and gave me more detailed information about the store. One thing I really like is that it is also giving me the radius the store can reach represented by dotted line with red color. I got it ASAP. If I chose another store, the comparison feature is triggered. The software was color-coding the two store so that it is clear to me which data goes to which store. There seems to be more features CARTO can do, and I am curious to see more.

ToolKit - Caolaboratory

Colaboratroy is a toolkit for researching mainly for machine learning. It is a Jupyter notebook environment and users do not need to adjust any setting to use it. Users can use Jupyter notebook to share with the teammates using web browser, without downloading, installing or running any local softwares.

The first thing I did this week is to clean the data, especially for the category of population served. Originally, CSforAll recorded the data as main population served, the next column is the number. However, it is hard for us and for software to associate the number with the specific category. We decided to create separate columns for individual categories and the number of population below. By doing this, Tableau was able to read the number and recognize the number is for this category.

Tableau now can generate graphs

We have also continue working on the data visualization for the trend among three years. When the user first visit the page, the graph is going to show data for all of the three years. And if the user clicks on one of the year, the lower graph will just show the category of this year.
