Data Visualization #01

Updated: Sep 27, 2018

Hi, my name is Yuanyuan Song. You can also call me Nicole. My interests is to work in the UX design field who deal with both qualitative and quantitive data. My goal for the course is to explore different ways to present data intuitively.

Tool and Justification

My potential tool is p5.js because I have a little experience with JavaScript and would like to learn more about it. Also using code can make data visualization interactive.

Tool History

In 2001, Ben Fry and Casey Reas created Processing for designers to code with a beginner-friendly environment. However, there is issue about Processing is that it cannot pull data from hardware and network. In 2013, a question was raised: “What if Processing started over?” Lauren MaCathy proposed to pull the core of Processing which is the openness, friendliness, accessibility, visuals and design a new platform. And this project is p5.js. Not like Processing which can only draw on canvas, p5.js is drawing on a web browser which can also contain elements like paragraphs and video player.

Use Cases and Examples

Contrains and Challenges

It will be mine level of coding. Just like I mentioned I have little experience in JavaScript, so I have to spend time learning about this tool.

Tutorial Process

This video talks about the history of Processing and p5.js which I have wrote above.

This video is a case study of data visualization with White House Media Data. It ran through every line of code the project requires in a intuitive way.

The channel “coding train” also has a serious of tutorials about data.
